What Walmart says about its interviews

In June 2025 Walmart began piloting an AI Interview Coach with its associates. It is a practice tool that walks through up to 10 questions and scores each answer from 1 to 10; Walmart does not describe it as part of the real interview. Walmart pilots AI Interview Coach (Walmart news, June 2025)

Walmart's hiring page says some positions require an assessment to be considered, and that Walmart tries to respond to applicants within a week. Hiring process FAQ (Walmart Careers)

Walmart Store Team Lead interview

Not much is published about the Walmart store Team Lead interview. Walmart's own tips describe behavioral, situational questions with a follow-up asking for a similar time, and suggest answering in STAR form. Recent Team Lead reports on Glassdoor describe a short, friendly conversation, about 30 minutes in one case, covering customer service, leading a team, conflict between associates and juggling tasks. One candidate mentions a second round. Still unclear: whether there is an online assessment, and whether the interview happens by phone, by video or in the store.

Our 2 practice rounds

30 min practice

Behavioral interview with the hiring manager

See whether the candidate can lead associates on the floor, look after customers, handle conflict and set priorities, shown through real examples from past work.

Practice focus: Past customer service example that went beyond the usual task. Leading or coaching a team member so the whole team succeeds. Conflict between associates and how you resolved it. Setting task priorities when work competes for time.

Illustrative practice follow-ups: “Ask what you would do differently in the same situation.” “Ask for a similar situation to test if the example is typical.”

Possible second interview with store leaders

See whether the candidate is ready for day-to-day supervision: scheduling, coaching, feedback and training, and making sound calls on the floor.

Practice focus: Giving feedback to an associate who misses standards. Covering a shift gap or schedule problem in a department. Training a new associate on a department task.

Illustrative practice follow-ups: “Ask what happens if the associate does not improve.”

What candidates and sources report

  • Walmart says the application usually takes 20 to 25 minutes. A resume is not required, but the applicant must give job history. Walmart
  • Walmart says some positions require assessments. The sources do not show whether team lead roles require one. Walmart
  • Walmart says it tries to respond to applicants within a week of applying, though timing varies. Walmart
  • A US Sam's Club Member Team Lead posting, a front-end supervisor role close to a store team lead, lists minimum requirements of 6 months of retail experience on front-end equipment, 6 months of customer service experience, and age 18 or older. Preferred experience is leading a front-end team and supervising others. Job posting
  • The same posting's duties include assigning work, giving feedback, training associates, and taking part in hiring, scheduling, coaching, and evaluating associates. Job posting

How to prepare

  • Write four STAR stories with results: one each on customer service, team success, conflict between associates, and juggling tasks. Add numbers or clear outcomes, and keep each story to about two minutes.
  • Prepare coaching and scheduling examples: one each on giving feedback, training someone, and covering a schedule gap. For each, explain your decision, the reason and the result.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Don't answer in general terms without a real example from your past.
  • Don't blame associates or former managers in a conflict story.
  • Don't stop before you get to the result.
  • Don't say you would always go straight to a manager.
  • Don't describe feedback as only telling people what to do.

Questions to ask your interviewers

  • Which department would I lead, and how many associates would I supervise?
  • How many interviews do Team Lead candidates meet, and who conducts each one?
  • Does the Team Lead application include an online assessment?
  • How do Team Leads share scheduling and coaching duties with coaches and department managers?
  • How will you measure success for a new Team Lead in the first 90 days?

Walmart Stocker interview

Walmart says you apply online, and some positions also ask for an assessment. Stocker candidates most often describe one short, friendly interview with a store manager or team lead. The questions center on your availability, especially overnight and weekend shifts, and on whether you're reliable and ready for steady physical work. Many also get a simple customer service question, and a few describe only a quick phone call before onboarding. Steps vary by store.

Our 1 practice rounds

40 min practice

Interview with the hiring manager

The manager wants to know you can work the shifts the store needs, handle the physical work, show up reliably, and stay calm and kind with customers and teammates.

Practice focus: Availability for overnight, weekend, and flexible shifts. Comfort with lifting, long hours on your feet, and unloading trucks. What you can bring to Walmart. A short story about helping a customer or dealing with a teammate who isn't doing their share.

Illustrative practice follow-ups: “Ask whether the overnight availability the candidate gave fits their real life, including transport, sleep and other commitments.”

Walmart Stocker interview questions

What candidates and sources report

  • Walmart says you apply online and that some positions also require an assessment. Independent guides describe the usual order as application, a situational assessment, then an interview. Walmart
  • Stocker candidates most often describe a short one-on-one interview with a store manager or team lead. Article
  • Availability is the most common reported topic, especially overnight and weekend shifts and any time off you need soon. Article
  • Reported customer questions include a time you went above and beyond for a customer and how you would handle an upset or frustrated customer. Article
  • Reported motivation questions ask what you can bring to Walmart and what your goals are in working there. Article

How to prepare

  • Write your exact weekly availability: List the days, start and end times, and any limits on overnight work. Check your transport and sleep plan. Practice saying it in two sentences.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Don't say you're open to any shift unless you really are. Name your actual limits.
  • Don't let a story run long without saying what you actually did.
  • Don't treat the interview as a formality. Bring one real example of hard work or helping a teammate.

Questions to ask your interviewers

  • Which shifts does this store need to fill, and are overnight hours part of the job?
  • What happens after this interview, and when would I hear back?
  • How much lifting does a typical shift involve, and what equipment and training do new stockers get?
  • Is there an overnight pay premium for this role?

Walmart Software Engineer interview

Walmart doesn't publish its software engineer interview steps, so this plan follows recent candidate reports and guides. Most describe a first coding screen, often with Karat (an outside interviewing company) or a HackerRank test, then interviews covering medium data structures and algorithms problems, your past projects, system design, and behavioral questions with the hiring manager. The shape changes by team and country, and round lengths aren't confirmed.

Our 4 practice rounds

60 min practice

First coding screen

Checks that you can solve a medium data structures and algorithms problem with correct, clear code and explain its time and space cost.

Practice focus: Medium problem on strings, heaps, or arrays with a no-brute-force requirement. Short debugging task in a web-style code sample. Basic data structure warm-up before a harder problem.

Illustrative practice follow-ups: “Interviewer asks for a faster approach or a lower memory use.”

45 min practice

Technical coding and project deep dive

Checks your coding on a medium problem and how well you know the architecture and decisions behind one past project.

Practice focus: Medium problem on streaming data, heaps, or substrings. Walk through the architecture of one past project. Explain internals of a data structure or Java concept used in the solution.

Illustrative practice follow-ups: “Interviewer asks why you chose this design and what you would change now.”

45 min practice

System design or low-level design

Checks that you can design a scalable service with clear components, data models, and trade-offs at a mid-level scope.

Practice focus: Real-time inventory tracking across many stores and warehouses. Payments-style service with consistency needs. Class and API design for a small component.

Illustrative practice follow-ups: “Interviewer raises traffic tenfold or breaks one component and asks what changes.”

Behavioral and hiring manager round

Learns how you handle conflict, ambiguity, production issues, and helping others, and how you would fit the team.

Practice focus: Time you went beyond the task on a project. Conflict or disagreement with a teammate. Production issue or unclear requirement and how you acted.

Illustrative practice follow-ups: “Interviewer asks what you personally did and what the result was.”

  • Variation of Find Median from Data Stream; Longest Increasing Subsequence; Best Time to Buy and Sell Stock. Independent guide

What candidates and sources report

  • Several candidates report a Karat coding interview, run by an outside company, as the first round for US Software Engineer loops. Article
  • Reports and guides describe an onsite or virtual stage with coding, system design, and behavioral rounds. One senior report describes a three-hour virtual onsite. Candidate report
  • Reported coding questions are mostly LeetCode-style, medium-level data structures and algorithms problems. Candidate report
  • Reported system design topics include real-time inventory tracking, payment systems, scalability, and distributed systems trade-offs. Independent guide
  • Interviewers spend a good share of time on prior projects and their architecture. Candidate report

How to prepare

  • Practice medium coding problems and check them by hand: Solve heap, string, and array problems. Once the code is written, trace one normal and one edge input by hand, then state the time and space cost.
  • Prepare one project deep dive: Write down the goal, your role, the design choices and trade-offs, and a measured result. Be ready to explain how the tools you used work under the hood.
  • Practice retail-scale system designs: Design a real-time inventory service and a payment service. Cover the APIs, data model, consistency, and failure handling, and compare active-active with active-passive setups.
  • Prepare four behavioral stories: Cover conflict, ambiguity, a production issue, and helping a co-worker. Give your own action and the result for each.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Do not start coding before you check input limits and edge cases.
  • Do not go quiet when you get stuck. Say what you will try next.
  • Do not say "we" for every decision. Say what you did.
  • Do not skip testing your code by hand once it is written.
  • Do not name technologies without saying why you picked each one.

Questions to ask your interviewers

  • Which interview stages should I expect for this team, and does the first screen use Karat or HackerRank?
  • Is this role Software Engineer II or III, and how does the scope differ?
  • Is an AI assistant allowed during the coding screen?
  • Which systems does this team own, and what scale do they run at?
  • How does the team handle on-call and production issues?
