Walmart · Mid-level
Prepare for the Walmart Software Engineer interview with 4 practice rounds and what each one looks for. Pick any round and an AI interviewer runs it with you at full length, with follow-up questions. Afterwards you’ll see what went well and what to work on next.
Your first 60 minutes of practice are free. No card needed.
Next: your first full round
One full practice round shows where you stand before you work on anything specific.
Pick a round to see what it asks of you and where you stand on it.
Checks that you can solve a medium data structures and algorithms problem with correct, clear code and explain its time and space cost.
Interviewer asks for a faster approach or a lower memory use.
Walmart doesn't publish its software engineer interview steps, so this plan follows recent candidate reports and guides. Most describe a first coding screen, often with Karat (an outside interviewing company) or a HackerRank test, then interviews covering medium data structures and algorithms problems, your past projects, system design, and behavioral questions with the hiring manager. The shape changes by team and country, and round lengths aren't confirmed.
Worth redoing if you hear something from the recruiter that contradicts this.
Every round you’ve done for this job, newest first.
First coding screen, Technical coding and project deep dive, System design or low-level design, and Behavioral and hiring manager round have no attempts yet.
Pick five medium problems: two on heaps, two on strings, one on arrays. For each one, write the brute-force idea, the better pattern, and the time and space cost in two lines. Do not code them all.
Reports describe LeetCode-style medium problems. One candidate describes a string problem solved without brute force. Another describes a Find Median from Data Stream variation.

Choose one language and write a small template for input checks. Then code one problem in a plain editor. When the code is done, trace one normal input and one edge input on paper before you run it.
Correct working code is the main goal. A hand trace catches errors early. You may face an unfamiliar editor, so practice without autocomplete.
Suggested approach
Write three short sentences you will say at the start: restate the problem, ask about input limits and edge cases, and name the brute-force option. Say them once.
Several candidates report a live first round run by an outside company. A clear opening lets you talk through your thinking under time pressure.

You have a two-line plan for five medium problems, and you have traced one problem by hand in your chosen language.
The format description: a 60-minute live interview with a short discussion and a longer programming part in an IDE. The embedded video did not load. Karat may not apply to every team.
Use the format to shape your practice. Plan to write working code first and explain each step.
Your first practice round takes 60 minutes.
Questions that fill in what the research couldn’t tell us.
Which interview stages should I expect for this team, and does the first screen use Karat or HackerRank?
Is this role Software Engineer II or III, and how does the scope differ?
Is an AI assistant allowed during the coding screen?
Which systems does this team own, and what scale do they run at?
How does the team handle on-call and production issues?
