What Airbnb says about its interviews

Airbnb’s values preparation specifies at least one 45-minute core-values interview with an interviewer outside the functional team. Airbnb Core Values Interview preparation

Airbnb’s published values emphasize belonging, care for others, curiosity and resourceful delivery. Airbnb: Life at Airbnb

Airbnb Frontend Platform Engineer interview

Prepare to implement a frontend feature, reason about browser performance and platform architecture, and explain how your work improves the experience of guests, hosts, and product teams. Airbnb’s values interview deserves the same preparation as coding. Build depth in asynchronous state, accessibility, loading performance, and adoption of shared infrastructure; bring project stories that connect technical choices to user and developer outcomes.

The 5 rounds

60 min

Frontend coding assessment

Deliver a coherent frontend feature that remains correct during rapid input and failed requests.

Expect: One asynchronous search component with keyboard and failure states.

Follow-ups: “What happens when the component is removed mid-request?” “How is an old selection handled after the query changes?”

60 min

Frontend feature extension

Evolve one feature while preserving a clear state owner, accessible interaction and predictable edge cases.

Expect: A date-selection or collection component with progressively added constraints.

Follow-ups: “How do disabled dates affect a range?” “What changes when multiple months are visible?”

60 min

Frontend platform and performance

Design a fast, resilient frontend architecture and show how you would locate its dominant performance cost.

Expect: A listing or search experience examined through state, delivery and performance.

Follow-ups: “What dominates on a slow phone and network?” “How do you migrate consumers without breaking their releases?”

60 min

Project impact and collaboration

Show that your platform work improved developer or user outcomes and that you can deliver through cross-functional disagreement.

Expect: A platform project with measured adoption. A technically expensive design request. A delivery decision that required changing course.

Follow-ups: “What did consumers have to change to adopt it?” “How did you preserve user value when cutting scope?”

45 min

Core values interview

Demonstrate Airbnb’s values through concrete behavior toward colleagues and the people affected by your work.

Expect: Helping someone succeed in an unfamiliar environment. Learning through an unexpected setback. Finding a resourceful way to deliver value.

Follow-ups: “What did the other person actually need?” “What did you do when the initial plan failed?”

What candidates and sources report

  • Airbnb’s values preparation specifies at least one 45-minute core-values interview with an interviewer outside the functional team. Airbnb
  • Airbnb’s published values emphasize belonging, care for others, curiosity and resourceful delivery. Airbnb
  • The Core Foundation senior frontend role emphasizes fast web experiences and a shared development path for product teams. Job posting
  • One frontend candidate describes an autocomplete assessment with debouncing, keyboard interaction and network-error handling. Candidate report
  • The same frontend account describes a date-picker exercise extended to multiple months and disabled dates. Candidate report

How to prepare

  • Build async interaction fluency: Implement autocomplete, then trace stale responses, cancellation, failure and keyboard selection. State the invariant at each transition.
  • Extend one component: Add range limits, disabled states or pagination to a small feature. Preserve one state owner and manually check boundary interactions.
  • Diagnose before optimizing: Draw an image-heavy page’s loading path. Identify the evidence that distinguishes network, bundle and rendering bottlenecks.
  • Prepare platform impact: Choose a shared-tooling project. Explain adoption, migration cost, consumer feedback and measured user or developer outcomes.
  • Ground the values in action: Prepare examples of hosting, resourcefulness, curiosity and mission. Rehearse follow-ups about what you did and what changed.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Do not treat debouncing as protection against every request race.
  • Do not leave keyboard behavior until after the feature is complete.
  • Do not use effects to synchronize values that can be derived.
  • Do not trade correctness for visual polish.
  • Do not prescribe lazy loading for content needed immediately.

Questions to ask your interviewers

  • What is the largest source of friction for teams using the frontend platform?
  • Which guest or host journey most needs performance improvement?
  • How do platform and product teams negotiate migration cost?

Airbnb Product Manager interview

Recent Airbnb PM evidence supports hiring-manager behavioral depth, product sense, cross-functional leadership and strategy, with an intentionally ambiguous take-home case and panel defense in some loops. Current role postings emphasize vision, roadmap and regional or platform coordination. Prepare decisions that balance guest, host and business effects, then defend one priority through new evidence instead of treating marketplace breadth as permission to avoid a choice.

The 5 rounds

40 min

Hiring manager product ownership

Establish credible senior ownership through distinct product, influence and learning stories.

Expect: Favorite product built. Influence across a data gap. Decision that changed after learning.

Follow-ups: “What did you personally decide?” “Which side of the marketplace paid the cost?”

40 min

Marketplace product sense

Design a focused marketplace experience that balances guest demand, host supply and trust.

Expect: New trip-planning journey. Service discovery and booking. Host tool with guest consequence.

Follow-ups: “What host behavior enables this?” “Where can trust fail?”

40 min

Case presentation and defense

Present and defend a product recommendation for an ambiguous marketplace problem.

Expect: One ambiguous marketplace strategy with explicit non-goals.

Follow-ups: “Which assumption is load-bearing?” “What would make you stop the bet?”

40 min

Cross-functional leadership

Align expert partners on a marketplace decision without relying on authority or vague consensus.

Expect: Design protects trust at a conversion cost. Operations exposes an unscalable exception. Engineering challenges launch scope.

Follow-ups: “What risk would block launch?” “How will we learn quickly?”

40 min

Values and belonging

Test mission and values through accountable product behavior rather than travel enthusiasm.

Expect: Designed for an excluded user. Failure affecting trust. Decision balancing community and growth.

Follow-ups: “Who challenged your assumption?” “What product behavior changed afterward?”

What candidates and sources report

  • Current Airbnb Product Manager roles own product vision, strategy and roadmap across markets or platforms. Job posting
  • A February 2026 Staff candidate reports a hiring-manager behavioral conversation about a favorite built product and influencing a non-data-savvy partner. Candidate report
  • That candidate also reports a role-relevant question about AI changing SEO. Candidate report
  • Candidate-informed evidence describes an intentionally ambiguous take-home case with about a week for preparation and panel pushback. Independent guide
  • A synthesis of six candidate reports identifies product sense, cross-functional leadership and product strategy stages. Independent guide

How to prepare

  • Tighten product ownership stories: Lead with the disputed decision, not the roadmap. Separate guest and host consequences.
  • Map a two-sided journey: Draw both user journeys before choosing the intervention. Name the marketplace behavior that must change first.
  • Defend one marketplace case: Open with the recommendation and two explicit non-goals. Track which panel evidence changes the plan.
  • Practice partner conflict: Ask for the strongest failure scenario. Name who owns the call before closing.
  • Prepare mission trade-offs: Use examples with a concrete product consequence. Name whose perspective was missing first.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Do not call launch completion an outcome.
  • Do not portray a partner as irrational resistance.
  • Do not design only the guest surface.
  • Do not use more choice as the default solution.
  • Do not bury the decision behind market background.

Questions to ask your interviewers

  • Will the case be take-home, live or both?
  • Which side of the marketplace is this role expected to own first?
  • What distinguishes strong product sense from direct domain experience on this team?

The 4 rounds

Follow-ups: “Which global standard did you challenge?” “What scaled beyond the first market?”

  • Do not claim one market represents every region.
  • Do not make country stereotypes into requirements.
  • Do not fragment the product for every variation.
  • Do not dismiss regional input as edge cases.
