How Roblox interviews

Start with the reported process for your role, then use our practice rounds to rehearse the skills it tests. The number, order, and length of the exercises below describe our practice plans; they are not a confirmed interview schedule. Follow your recruiter’s instructions for your team and location.

Roblox Software Engineer interview

Roblox doesn't publish its software engineer interview process. Guides and candidate reports describe an online assessment that mixes coding problems with Roblox-hosted strategy games, then one or two 45-minute coding interviews, behavioral interviews, and a hiring manager chat. One 2025 report pairs an algorithm interview with an object-oriented design interview. Guides list system design for experienced candidates, but no report confirms how a mid-level loop handles it, and the round count and order still vary.

Our 4 practice rounds

60 min practice

Online assessment: coding and games

See whether you can solve hard algorithm problems and optimization tasks on your own, under time pressure, when the instructions aren't fully clear.

Practice focus: Hard graph, matrix, or dynamic programming problem, sometimes with a Roblox-style product twist. Game-style task that needs a rule inferred and then an optimized strategy.

Illustrative practice follow-ups: “Asks for a faster approach after a working but slow solution.”

45 min practice

Technical interview: algorithms

See whether you can solve a medium-level algorithm problem with correct code while explaining your reasoning as you go.

Practice focus: Tree or graph problem such as serialization or traversal. Array problem that uses prefix sums, hashing, or a sliding window. Medium-to-hard problem followed by a discussion of tradeoffs.

Illustrative practice follow-ups: “Asks how the solution changes for larger input or a changed constraint.”

Technical interview: object-oriented design

See whether you can model a problem with clear classes and interfaces and write working code that other engineers could extend.

Practice focus: Implement a small system with several classes and a clear interface. Extend an existing design with a new requirement.

Illustrative practice follow-ups: “Adds a new requirement and asks how the design changes.”

Behavioral and hiring manager interviews

See your ownership, collaboration, learning from failure, influence, and reasons for wanting Roblox, through specific stories from your past work.

Practice focus: Failure and what changed afterward. Disagreement with a manager or peer. Pushing for a technology or approach. Motivation for Roblox and for this team.

Illustrative practice follow-ups: “Asks what the candidate would do differently now.”

Roblox Software Engineer interview questions

  • Serialize and deserialize a binary tree. Candidate report
  • Two Roblox-hosted game-style problems in which the candidate must optimize something. Candidate report
  • One 45-minute LeetCode-style problem, then a second 45-minute interview to implement an object-oriented design or interface. Candidate report
  • LeetCode medium-to-hard algorithm and data structure problems, with discussion of design, optimization, and tradeoffs (intern report). Candidate report
  • Practice problems listed by the guide include Course Schedule II, Exclusive Time of Functions, and Maximize Distance to Closest Person. Independent guide

What candidates and sources report

  • No official Roblox source on the interview process was found. Everything here comes from third-party guides, candidate reviews, and job board reposts. Independent guide
  • Candidates and guides describe an online assessment that mixes coding problems with Roblox-hosted strategy games and a short decision-making or personality section. Independent guide
  • Prepfully lists system design prompts such as an in-app purchase transaction service and a real-time chat app. Exponent includes a system design round in the experienced-candidate onsite and says senior candidates often get two. Independent guide
  • Reported behavioral questions include why Roblox, a time you pushed for a technology, a time you took a risk, and a time you failed. Independent guide
  • Software Engineer postings without a senior title ask for 1 to 3 years or 3+ years of experience. One lists Roblox or Luau game development as a strong plus. Job posting

How to prepare

  • Practice hard algorithm problems under a timer: Solve graph, matrix, tree, and dynamic programming problems. Write the code, check it by hand, and state the complexity each time.
  • Practice a medium set of tree, graph, and array problems: Cover binary tree serialization, course scheduling, and one array problem such as subarray sums. Explain your approach before you write code.
  • Practice a small object-oriented design: Implement a small multi-class system in 45 minutes. Then add one new requirement and explain what changes.
  • Prepare five STAR stories: Cover a failure, a disagreement with your manager, pushing for a technology, a risk you took, and why you want Roblox. Add one measurable result to each.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Don't spend most of your time on one problem.
  • Don't skip the complexity check for large inputs.
  • Don't start coding before you and the interviewer agree on the approach.
  • Don't brush past a hint from the interviewer.
  • Don't add classes you can't explain a need for.

Questions to ask your interviewers

  • Which stages does the software engineer loop for this team include, and in what order?
  • How long is the online assessment, and can I spread it over a few days?
  • What are the game tasks in the assessment looking for?
  • Will the onsite include object-oriented design, system design, or both?
  • Which level is this role, and how is level decided?
  • How does the team measure success for a new engineer in the first six months?
