Ramp Software Engineer interview

Ramp publishes no loop details for mid-level Software Engineers. Guides and a few candidates describe an online assessment or take-home, a recruiter screen, a live pair-programming screen, and a final loop with system design, a project deep dive, and a culture round. Coding tasks look like practical product work. Stage order, lengths, and AI-tool rules aren't confirmed.

Our 4 practice rounds

90 min practice

Online practical assessment

Shows whether you can build working, product-style features in stages, quickly and cleanly, without live help.

Practice focus: Staged in-memory data store with growing requirements. Request-handling component such as a rate limiter. Calendar or scheduling logic with overlapping ranges.

Illustrative practice follow-ups: “Extend the solution with a new requirement and explain what must change.”

Live pair-programming coding screen

Shows how you build a practical feature live, talk through your choices, and use the interviewer's feedback.

Practice focus: Small DOM or React app with interactive state. Two-part backend task where part two changes the design. API or request-handling logic with data structures.

Illustrative practice follow-ups: “Change a requirement mid-task and ask how the design adapts.”

System design on schema and APIs

Shows whether you can design a practical service with sound schema, API and consistency choices, sometimes built around a past project.

Practice focus: Design a financial-style service with ledger or transaction data. Redesign a component from a past project at larger scale. API and schema design with retry and idempotency concerns.

Illustrative practice follow-ups: “Ask what breaks first at ten times the load.”

Project deep dive and culture interview

Learns whether you ship real work on your own initiative, make quick decisions, and work well with others.

Practice focus: Walk through a shipped project and your exact contribution. Time you moved fast with incomplete information. Disagreement or feedback from a teammate and the result.

Illustrative practice follow-ups: “Ask what you would do differently and why.”

Ramp Software Engineer interview questions

What candidates and sources report

  • Ramp's Emerging Talent page, for internships and early-career roles, says recruiting typically takes 3 to 4 weeks and includes technical assessments, phone screens and evaluations. It says interviews are practical and open book. Ramp
  • Ramp's careers page says it only hires builders and asks, "If this person started a company, would we join them?" A Ramp blog post on building with velocity says it hires for high slope, high agency and high humility. Ramp
  • For the related Forward Deployed Engineer role, Ramp's engineering blog says interviews check coding, debugging, data structures and system design, but technical performance is a minimum to clear rather than something to maximize. Drive, communication and customer empathy carry weight. Ramp
  • Two independent guides describe an early online assessment or puzzle, then a recruiter screen, then a live pair-programming phone screen. Article
  • Reported coding tasks look like practical product work: a database built in stages, a rate limiter, a calendar with overlapping events, and a Wordle-style app in the DOM. React and DOM skills come up in frontend reports. Article

How to prepare

  • Practice staged build tasks under a time limit: Build a rate limiter, an in-memory store, and an overlap calendar. Give yourself 60 to 90 minutes each, and walk through an example by hand after each stage.
  • Rehearse pair programming while talking it through: Solve a small DOM or React task with a partner, explaining each step as you go. Practice taking hints and changing course quickly.
  • Practice schema and API design with failure cases: Design a ledger-style service. Cover idempotency, retries and consistency, and be ready to redesign one past project.
  • Prepare two project stories with results: Write the context, your decisions, numbers, and lessons for each, showing speed and ownership.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Do not over-design stage one before you see later stages.
  • Do not leave code half-edited when time ends.
  • Do not code silently for long periods.
  • Do not ignore a hint from the interviewer.
  • Do not list technologies without a reason.

Questions to ask your interviewers

  • What stages make up the current loop for this role, and how long is each one?
  • Can candidates use AI tools in any interview stage? Is there an AI interview, and what does it cover?
  • Which language and stack should I expect in the live coding rounds?
  • What does a strong mid-level engineer deliver in the first six months on this team?
