McDonald's Crew Member interview
Many US McDonald's restaurants are owned and run by independent franchisees, and hiring happens at each restaurant, so the steps depend on who owns the one you apply to. Candidates usually describe a short, friendly interview of about 15 to 20 minutes with a manager, and some get an offer at the end. Expect questions about when you can work, teamwork, busy shifts and unhappy customers. McDonald's UK says its interviews focus on values and attitude, not qualifications. Little is published about current US steps, so some restaurants may add a phone call, a group interview or a trial shift.
Our 1 practice rounds
Short manager interview
The manager wants to know when you can work, whether you'll show up reliably, and how you treat customers and teammates when the restaurant gets busy.
Practice focus: Availability and shift limits. Teamwork example from school, home, or work. Handling an upset customer. Coping with a busy or stressful period.
Illustrative practice follow-ups: “Interviewer asks for a real example when the answer is general.” “Interviewer tests whether stated availability fits the weekend or late-shift needs.”

What candidates and sources report

- The US employment FAQ says hiring is handled at the store level, so questions about an application go to that restaurant's hiring manager. McDonald's
- The US FAQ says some restaurants are company-owned and others are independently owned and operated by franchisees, and that hiring policies can vary between them. Many US crew postings come from franchisee restaurants, where the franchisee is the employer and runs hiring. McDonald's
- The Ireland careers FAQ says McDonald's uses its McHire system, with a virtual assistant called Olivia, to capture, screen, assess and interview candidates. A member of the restaurant's recruitment team does the interview. McDonald's
- The UK FAQ says interviews use questions about values and attitudes, such as a time you worked in a team and made a difference. McDonald's says it hires for qualities and potential, not qualifications. McDonald's
How to prepare
- Write down your weekly availability: List the days, start times and end times you can work, including weekends and late shifts. Say them clearly and be honest about any limits.
Mistakes to avoid
- Don't just say "I'm flexible". Name the days and hours you can work.
- Don't blame coworkers or customers in your stories.
- Don't give long, general answers. A short, specific example works better.
Questions to ask your interviewers
- Which shifts do new crew members usually work, and how many hours a week do you expect?
- Is this restaurant owned by a franchisee, and who else will I meet before a decision is made?
- What training do new crew members get in the first two weeks?
- What does a successful new crew member do well in the first month?
- Is there a trial shift, and when will I hear a decision?
McDonald's Shift Manager interview
Many US McDonald's restaurants are owned and run by independent franchisees, and hiring happens at each restaurant, so the steps depend on who owns the one you apply to. Most reports describe one conversational interview with the restaurant or store manager. Expect questions about your availability, past leadership, angry customers, crew conflict during a rush, and training new crew. Some reports add waste, inventory and food safety. A few describe extra phone or in-person rounds, so it's worth asking how many steps to expect.
Our 1 practice rounds
Interview with the restaurant manager
The manager wants to know whether you can run a crew shift reliably: when you can work, how you lead people, how calmly you handle upset customers and crew conflict, and what you know about food safety, waste and inventory.
Practice focus: Prior roles, leadership experience, and why a manager job now. Irate customer during a busy window or rush. Dispute between two crew members mid-shift. Training and motivating crew; wastage, inventory, or food safety basics.
Illustrative practice follow-ups: “Ask what you personally did, and what happened after the rush ended.” “Ask how you would handle it again with a new crew member.”
