Home Depot Software Engineer interview

Not much is written about Home Depot's Software Engineer II interviews. Candidates describe a recruiter or HR call, one or two technical interviews, and a hiring manager conversation. The technical questions cover data structures, algorithms, basic object-oriented design, and the team's stack, often Java and Spring Boot. One 2025 candidate found the behavioral part very easy. The order, the length of each round, and whether mid-level candidates get a separate design round aren't confirmed.

Home Depot Software Engineer interview questions

What candidates and sources report

  • The official technology page lists Java 11, JavaScript, Spring Boot, Node.js, Angular, Azure, React, Python, Kubernetes, Docker, Cassandra, GCP, Golang, PCF, Spinnaker, and MongoDB. Home Depot
  • The 2027 software engineering internship posting says applicants take an online assessment of about 17 minutes about their approach to work, right after applying. No posting shows this for mid-level roles. Job posting
  • Home Depot's official online assessment page covers hourly store and distribution center roles. It doesn't say it applies to software engineers. Home Depot
  • Home Depot's own interview tips (2019 and 2020) are written for store hiring. They ask for specific examples, honesty about what you know, and a time you adapted to change. Home Depot
  • Home Depot postings use the titles Software Engineer, Sr. Software Engineer, Software Developer, and Software Engineer II. Many are remote. Job posting

How to prepare

  • Ask the recruiter how the interviews work: Ask about the stages, how long each one runs, the coding tool, and the team. That tells you which format you'll actually get.
  • Practice fundamentals while explaining your thinking: Solve array, hash map, stack, and linked list problems. Explain the approach and complexity first. Dry-run by hand on normal and edge inputs.
  • Review the posted team stack: Read the posting. Refresh Java, Spring Boot, SQL and NoSQL, React, and Kubernetes pod basics. Prepare one real example for each.
  • Prepare three situation-action-result stories: Write stories on teamwork, ownership, and a mistake. Add outcomes. Practice each in under three minutes.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Do not give generic reasons for wanting to join.
  • Do not list tools without saying what you did.
  • Do not code in silence.
  • Do not skip edge cases such as empty input.
  • Do not claim tools you have not used.

Questions to ask your interviewers

  • Which team is this Software Engineer II opening for, and which stack does it use daily?
  • What are the stages of the interview process, and how long is each one?
  • Does the technical round use a shared editor, an online assessment, or a pseudocode exercise?
  • Does the loop include a design round at this level?
  • How does the team split work between new features and production support?
