Software Development Engineer, New Grad

Amazon · Entry-level (SDE I)

Research from Oct 94 rounds, none tried

This is how Amazon interviews for Software Development Engineer, New Grad, from our research: 4 rounds, what each one looks for, and how to prepare. Pick any round and an AI interviewer runs it with you out loud, by voice or by typing. Afterwards you’ll see what went well and what to work on next.

Your first 60 minutes of practice are free. No card needed.

Next: your first full round

Do the Online Assessment round.

One full round, as long as theirs, shows where you stand before you work on anything specific.

Online Assessment

Measures timed algorithmic fundamentals. Some versions also include work simulation or behavioral judgment items.

What strong sounds like

  • States assumptions, identifies inputs and constraints, and selects a clear sequence of steps.
  • Uses a standard data-structure or algorithm pattern that fits the constraints.
  • Produces readable code that handles the intended cases without missing core logic.
  • States time and space costs and avoids an approach that clearly exceeds likely limits.
  • Traces normal and boundary cases against the written code before submitting.

Expect to be pushed on

Time pressure across two problems
Pattern choice under changing constraints

Shapes of problem you may get

  • Timed array, string, hash-map, or sliding-window problems
  • Tree or graph traversal with edge-case follow-ups
  • Dynamic programming, greedy, or binary-search-on-answer variants

What they look for

Researched today

For Amazon SDE I/new grad, reports commonly show a two-question coding assessment, then three interviews; some show four. Live coding usually tests medium data-structure and algorithm problems, with dry runs, complexity, and edge-case follow-ups. Design or project discussion and Leadership Principles questions can appear. Amazon says Leadership Principles are assessed in every interview. Location and team may change the sequence.

They reward

  • Clear reasoning under technical follow-up pressure
  • Ownership with measurable results
  • Simple designs with explicit trade-offs

What to avoid

  • Do not spend most of the timer on premature optimization.
  • Do not submit without checking empty, minimal, duplicate, and boundary inputs.
  • Do not start coding before clarifying constraints and examples.
  • Do not claim correctness without tracing a difficult boundary case.
  • Do not add distributed components without a clear bottleneck.

How sure we are

Worth redoing if you hear something from the recruiter that contradicts this.

How to prepare

  1. Set a 70-minute coding plan

Choose a split for two coding problems. Reserve time to state assumptions, select a pattern, code, and trace empty, minimal, duplicate, and boundary inputs. Treat work simulation or judgment items as possible parts of the assessment.

Several reports describe two coding questions, and some also describe work simulation or judgment items. One report describes 70 minutes, but formats can differ.

  2. Refresh the reported algorithm patterns

Make a short pattern sheet for arrays, strings, hash maps, trees, graphs, breadth-first search, dynamic programming, greedy methods, binary search, and sliding windows. For each, note its trigger, data structure, and cost.

Exact-level reports cover a broad set of data structures and algorithms. Medium questions appear most often, but reported difficulty ranges from easy-medium to harder problems.

  3. Rehearse submission checks

Select two representative problems. For each, write the simplest suitable approach, state time and space costs, and trace the written code on one normal case and several boundary cases before you submit.

Reports mention edge cases, dry runs, complexity, and improvements. This round rewards correct, readable code, not only a final algorithm idea.

Then try the round

You have a timing plan, a one-page pattern sheet, and two selected problems with written boundary traces and complexity notes.

Review the possible non-coding assessment formats and practice prioritization, judgment, and problem-solving decisions.

Do

  • State assumptions, choose a tractable pattern, and write readable code.
  • Manually trace normal and boundary cases against the written code.

Avoid

  • Do not spend most of the timer on premature optimization.
  • Do not submit without checking empty, minimal, duplicate, and boundary inputs.

The real round takes 70 minutes. Your first try runs 45, so it fits in your free practice time.

Confirmed · 11
  • Multiple exact-level candidate reports describe an online assessment with two coding questions for Amazon SDE I or new-grad SDE roles.
  • Two exact-level candidate reports describe online-assessment work simulation or behavioral judgment items in addition to coding.
  • One 2025-start new-grad report says its online assessment used HackerRank and gave 70 minutes for two medium coding questions.
  • Several exact-level reports describe three interviews after the online assessment.
Likely · 2
  • The retrieved reports do not support one fixed interview count or order for Amazon SDE I new-grad candidates.
  • The reported question set suggests that entry-level candidates should show clear data-structure and algorithm reasoning, code correctness, complexity analysis, and behavioral evidence, rather than only a final coding answer.

Worth asking them

Questions that fill in what the research couldn’t tell us.

Which location and team own this SDE I new-grad role, and what loop sequence is active?
Does the online assessment include work simulation or situational judgment, and what time limit applies?
Does this loop include a separate design or Bar Raiser round?
